Jack Huczek
Shane Vanderson
A STUNNING UPSET AT THE WEST MICHIGAN OPEN
Top ranked Jack Huczek and # 7 Shane Vanderson cruised into action today after sweeping into the Finals. Jack was hoping to win his third consecutive West Michigan Open title. After nearly two hours of great racquetball, a new Champion was crowned. In a stunning upset featuring great play on both sides, Shane emerged victorious.
Game one started with great defense, but no scoring as both players traded great shots to keep the score tied at zero. Finally, Jack broke through and put on a typical run of picture-perfect shots, and great court coverage. It was starting to look like another Jack route and an easy road to the title. But Shane fought back to make a close game. After a late push, Jack closed out game 11-6.
Shane came out on fire in Game 2 quickly opening a big lead. In mirror fashion of game 1, Jack came back in this one before Shane was able to close it out. For the first time in three West Michigan Opens, Jack lost a game 11-6, and Shane was on the board.
The crowd of over 100 cheered both combatants as they came out for Game 3. Everyone expected Jack to fire back. Fire back he did. But, was it enough. Shane held tough as this one went down to the wire. Shane led most of the way and looked set to close it out until Jack ran three points late to make it 10-9. Shane got the side out, stepped in the box and played three perfect rallies to take game 3, 12-10.
Game 4 went as you would imagine, if you’ve ever seen Jack play. Focused and determined, he managed to hold off Shane who was not willing to let the reigning champ just walk back into the match. Another great game as Jack evened the match with an 11-9 win.
Momentum was clearly with Jack as they went to the tie breaker. But, would it be enough? Shane got out to an early lead and slowly built it as the game went on. Jack fought back and closed the gap, but could not keep Shane from the Finish line. Shane controlled the game and took home the title 11-7.
Jack had not lost a game in three years at the West Michigan Open, let alone a match. The crowd stayed riveted to their seats and saw some of the best racquetball on the planet.
What a great weekend. Thanks to all the sponsors, players and Pros who made it another spectacular West Michigan Open. We hope to see everyone out here next year.
